Patients usually complain of paresthesias along the distribution of the median nerve which supplies the skin over the first three fingers and the lateral half of the fourth finger on the palmer aspect. The median nerve, after it passes through the carpal tunnel also sends out a branch which supplies the thenar muscles. The earliest symptoms may occur at night with severe paresthesias or pain. Gentle massage and wringing of the hands usually results in relief of the symptoms in a few minutes. Symptoms can also occur from use and patients complain of symptoms occurring while knitting, sewing, holding a book, reading the newspaper, writing, etc. Occasionally, the impingement may be quite severe and the patients may be symptomatic all the time.🏁
