The city does not know your name.⏎ It knew someone else's once,⏎ someone who walked this same street⏎ at the same hour,⏎ in the same kind of rain,⏎ looking for the same kind of thing⏎ you are looking for now.⏎ It did not find it either.⏎ The city does not keep records of that.⏎ It only keeps the street.⏎ You are alone in the way⏎ that cities make you alone,⏎ surrounded and unreached,⏎ visible and unseen,⏎ present in a place⏎ that was here before you⏎ and will be here⏎ long after you stop walking through it.⏎ There is a kind of tired⏎ that sleep does not fix.⏎ You wake up carrying it⏎ the same way you went down,⏎ like luggage you forgot you were holding,⏎ like a word on the tip of your tongue⏎ that turned out to be nothing,⏎ just the shape of a word,⏎ just the feeling that something⏎ should have been there.⏎ You have been waiting for something⏎ to change that.⏎ You are not sure what.⏎ You are not sure it exists.⏎ But you keep the space open for it anyway,⏎ the way you leave a light on⏎ in a room no one is using,⏎ just in case,⏎ just in case someone comes.⏎ Time does not pass.⏎ You pass through it.⏎ It stays exactly where it is,⏎ and you move through it⏎ the way you move through water,⏎ feeling the resistance,⏎ feeling how much there is of it,⏎ never quite sure how far you have gone.⏎ You remember things wrong.⏎ The light was different.⏎ The person was standing somewhere else.⏎ What they said was not quite that.⏎ But the feeling was right,⏎ and the feeling is the only part⏎ you were ever trying to keep.⏎ The hour between three and four⏎ belongs to no one.⏎ The day has not started.⏎ The night has not finished.⏎ You are still here.⏎ That is something.⏎ You are not sure what,⏎ but it is something.🏁
