The read/write head is not in contact with the surface of the disk. The linear density depends on the amount of separation between the head and the disk - higher density requires closer separation. To achieve close separation, the head is flown on an air bearing and is referred to as the flying height. The bearing is simply a cushion of air that is dragged along by the rotating surface.🏁
